Visit of Honorable Dr. Fitsum Assefa Adela,

the Minister in charge of Plan and Development Commission of the Federal Government of Ethiopia

Honorable Dr. Fitsum Assefa Adela, the Minister in charge of Plan and Development Commission of the Federal Government of Ethiopia has today visited the Sustainable Development Center for Africa.

She said the purpose of her visit is to discuss ways of partnership in strengthening the reporting systems for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and other African Development Agendas. “As the Government organ in charge of development planning, I would say that we have done enough in terms of planning and policy making but the availability of data is still an issue. We need to support the Central Statistical Agency in this important area as well.” Minister Fitsum told the SDGC/A Staff that received her.

Dr. Belay Begashaw, the Director General of the Center informed the Minister that the Center has designed and developed a cloud-based monitoring and reporting system, which is the first of its kind, that not only accommodates the SDGs but also the Agenda 2063 as well as other national development programs .“ This system will require ownership from Governments and other partners and we believe it will close the gaps in data collection and reporting on SDGs and other African development Agendas.” Dr. Begashaw noted.

Minister Fitsum has saluted the Center’s initiative to address the data issue by establishing the System and pledged all possible support “we need to work together to make the system work fix this problem from the relevant agencies which are the entry points to national reporting, and this needs to be done as soon as possible

The pilot phase of the SDGC/A Monitoring and Reporting System will start with 10 countries including Ethiopia, and will cover the whole continent in the long run. The system is expected to facilitate the continental benchmarking and reporting for the development Agendas.
