Liberian MPs commit to push for SDGs implementation in Liberia
30 October 2019 – A delegation of 8 Members of the Parliament of the Republic of Liberia today paid a courtesy visit to the Headquarters of the SDG Center for Africa in Kigali. They were received by the Director General of the Center Dr. Belay Begashaw who took them through the objectives, activities and achievements of the Center.
Dr. Begashaw explained to the Liberian MPs that The SDGCA was established to support African countries in achieving the SDGs by 2030. “African Leaders are now aggressive in terms of setting and implementing agendas, our work is to help countries in that area and representing Africa technically in the discourse of setting agendas across the globe”, he noted. He also highlighted the key activities and achievements of the Center including the publication of the 3 year reality check report, the first of its kind, that was produced to assess where African countries stand after 3years of the SDGs establishment as well as the annual Index report that shows and ranks African countries according to their performance in implementing the SDGs. “We cannot change the goals but we can use the targets as a starting point.”
Hon. Acarous M. Gray, Vice Chair of the Committee on the Executive, the head of delegation, expressed the gratitude for the opportunity to visit the center which he called “an eye opener on the SDGs” and articulated their commitment to push for the SDGs implementation in Liberia. “Domestication is very key in this process and we believe SDGs are there to support national development. We will do our job as Legislators to make sure that SDGs implantation becomes a priority for our government.” Hon. Gray also mentioned that they will follow-up on the pledge to establish the SDGC/A Sub-Regional Center in Liberia.
