On 21st July, 2019 The Sustainable Development Goals Center for Africa was privileged to receive Mr. Shinichi Kitaoka, President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and his delegation.
Mr. Shinichi Kitaoka, who is also a Member of the SDGC/A Board held talks with Dr. Belay Begashaw, Director General of the Center on strategies to accelerate SDGs implementation in Africa. “The world is big, people need to work together and join efforts to achieve implementation of important initiatives that changes the communities’ lives.” said Dr. Belay Begashaw. Among the initiatives and pertinent projects, they discussed Universal Health Care, Nutrition, and Education as sectors that need much attention. Mr. Shinichi Kitaoka hailed the Center’s efforts of setting priorities and coordinating initiatives, which he considers as “a strategy to avoid duplication in SDGs implementation interventions across the continent.”
During the discussions, Mr. Kitaoka and Dr. Belay mentioned the launch of the SDGCA Sub-Regional Centers across Africa as a way of building capacities and ensuring coordination of initiatives for SDG implementation. The first Sub-Regional Center will be established in Lusaka, Zambia and is scheduled to be launched on the 07th of August 2019. It is expected that more sub-regional centers will be launched in Liberia and Nigeria among other countries.
Mr. Shinichi Kitaoka and Dr. Belay Begashaw reaffirmed the partnership between JICA and SDGCA; following the Memorandum of Cooperation they signed on 23rd October, 2017 at JICA headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.
