Benin becomes the first country to host The SDGC/A Monitoring and Reporting System.

From 14th to 26 September a Team of Monitoring and Evaluation Experts from The SDGC/A conducted a training for trainers on The National Monitoring and Reporting System for SDGs. The beneficiaries of the trainings were M&E staff, statisticians and focal persons in charge of development agendas from different government institutions in the Republic of Benin.

While officiating the trainings, Prof Alastaire ALINSATO, Chief of Staff in the State Ministry in charge of Development Planning, expressed his country’s gratitude towards The SDGC/A for the development of the system which, he said, will support the existing monitoring and reporting efforts. Prof ALISANTO pledged commitment towards domestication and effective use of the system in Benin.

Madam Olive Dushime, M&E Expert at the SDGC/A saluted the Government of Benin’s collaboration in the implementation process of the System and assured the authorities and the trainees that The SDGC/A will continue to provide necessary support for the success of the system in Benin.

About the system

The Monitoring and Reporting System is a country level system built using DHIS2 that will be used by individual countries to perform data entry for the SDGs. The system will enable Countries will be able to do report generation and visualization for the various goals for both Agenda 2030 and 2063. The system offers some features that allow the integration of national development plans into the system.

The National Monitoring and Reporting System aimed at supporting African governments in their endeavor to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through:

  1. Strengthening, centralizing and/or upgrading existing national data collection and reporting systems.
  2. Supporting the development of a national data collection and reporting system in countries where they do currently exist.
  3. Ensuring the availability of reliable, timely and comparable development data and, with respect to a production target, aiming for at least 80% of SDG indicators to be produced at national level.

Benin becomes the first country to host The SDGC/A Monitoring and Reporting System. The SDGC/A plans to take the system to all African countries in its efforts to support National statistical agencies (NSAs) expand data collection sources and report timely, as agreed upon during the “SDGs Three Years Journey” Conference held in Kigali in June 2019. The Center expects the Monitoring and Reporting systems to contribute in achieving at least 80% of the data reported by NSAs by 2023.

The center’s delegate Ms. Olive Dushime paid courtesy visits to the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in order to express gratitude to the Beninese authorities for their contribution, efforts and commitment towards the SDGs implementation.
