While welcoming the delegation, Dr. Belay Begashaw, the Center’s Director General reiterated that the SDGs are global goals but that the commitments and interventions should be at national levels, for every country to strategize the pathways to implementation. Dr. Begashaw took the delegation members through the essence of the SDGs and the Center as an African initiative to push for the achievement of the goals at the continental level. He applauded the Government of Ethiopia for the willingness to partner with the Center in enhancing national monitoring, evaluation and reporting system aligning it with the Center’s system to make it comprehensive enough to monitor and evaluate global goals such as the SDGs and the Agenda 2063.

Solomon Tesfasilassie, the Director General of the M&E Bureau at the PDC and head of delegation said that Ethiopia believes that monitoring and evaluation play an indispensable role in ensuring accountability, transparency and improving performance in the public sector as it is the only tool which guides the government towards deepening good governance. Thus, strengthening the national monitoring and evaluation system is expected to contribute towards improving the performance of the nation in relation to both global and national priorities.
During their study tour, these experts together with The SDGC/A M&E Team will assess the current Ethiopia SDG and A2063 data management system, needs, gaps and challenges. They will also go thought The SDGC/A MR system monitoring features and the Data portal. They will also assess Ethiopia’s readiness to align its existing systems with The SDGC/A M&E System.
